Is Simply Lite Chocolate Ketogenic Friendly?

At the time of writing this post, I’ve been on the ketogenic diet for over four years and logged over 200 blood ketone tests in an effort to estimate the effects of food and ingredients on my ketosis, including those in Simply Lite chocolate bars.

I used to pick these Simply Lite chocolate bars up years ago at Trader Joes before I knew better and they were consistently kicking me out of ketosis until I realized they were a problem. Simply Lite chocolate is one of the more deceptive “low carb” products I’ve come across. I’ll explain why in this post and recommend the best low carb chocolate I’ve found over the years as an alternative.

Simply Lite Chocolate Macro Nutrient Ratio:

Whole bar

Label Net Carbs:
3.5-7 grams of label net carbs per bar of chocolate depending on flavor, doesn’t sound too bad right?

Estimated Net Carbs: (My estimation based on the caloric values and glycemic index of ingredients)
35-39 grams of estimated net carbs per bar (yikes). +3.5-7g label net carbs and the rest from Maltitol, a sugar alcohol with 75% the caloric value of sugar and half the glycemic index which is more than enough to negatively affect ketosis.

Serving Size:
Each serving is only 25 grams and there are 3.5 servings per bar. Are these servings for ants?

Overeating:
Extremely easy to overeat this chocolate when it tastes as good as it does and the whole bar has 35-39 grams of estimated net carbs.

Simply Lite Chocolate Keto Conclusion:

Simply Lite chocolate bars do taste good and they have decent ingredients except for their choice of Maltitol as the primary sweetener. When there are plenty of zero glycemic index sweeteners like Erythritol, stevia, monk fruit extract, and inulin the switch doesn’t require much of a sacrifice.

The reason Simply Lite chocolate bars make me angry is that they’re misleading low carb and ketogenic dieters. Right on the front of the bar, it says “LOW CARB” and below that “Net effective carbs 1g” on their Dark Chocolate bars which although technically correct if you think all sugar alcohols are the same, which is horse shit. They also went with a 25 gram Mc Serving serving size so you’re getting 3.5 times more carbs than you bargained for unless you look at the nutrition facts which most people don’t.

My Favorite Ketogenic Friendly Dessert

ChocoperfectionSmall.png

ChocoPerfection blew me away the first time I tried it, the taste and texture were so much better than any other low carb chocolate I’d tried before. I thought it might be too good to be true so I tested my blood ketones one day then ate four bars of it, at the same time the next day my blood ketone reading was even higher than the previous day, I was sold.

I give ChocoPerfection a A ketogenic compatibility grade because of it’s low net carbs (2g per 50g bar), high fat, low protein, zero glycemic index sweeteners, and no mystery “fiber”. The only two downsides of ChocoPerfection are that it is expensive and if you really pig out you’ll most likely become the eye of a fart storm (a side effect of Erythritol and Inulin), both are prices I’m usually willing to pay.

They have a lot of great flavors too, dark and dark mint are my favorites and Raspberry is the only flavor I don’t like. The dark mint with a handful of macadamia nuts tastes just like thin mint cookies. You get the classic mint chocolate flavor with the salty and crunchy macadamia nuts, it’s my favorite ultra low carb dessert.

If you’re interested in trying some I’d recommend getting the variety pack and a pack of the dark chocolate so you can try all their flavors and still have more of the dark which you’re going to like anyways. They also have chocolate chips if you’re into baking and free shipping in the United States.
